If you read anything at all this week, read this.

About 95% of my customers who have gas heat do not have carbon monoxide alarms in their home. I have entered many homes on a routine visit and found deadly levels of carbon monoxide(CO). All it takes is for one component in your central heat to fail causing CO to enter your home and if you dont have an alarm it could be fatal. Save yourself and your children by running to wal mart and purchasing a $20 CO alarm.

Check your heat today.

Many of my customers have confusions about electric heat strips so thought i’d write this blog to keep my fellow fayetteville residents from a possible not-so-pleasant-surprise this winter.

If you’ve already turned your heat on this winter and have felt heat coming out of the vents it does not necessarily mean your heat is working. Heat pumps are built with backup heat to kick in should the compressor fail. this backup heat is actually a set of electric heat strips which heat the house well but cost a small fortune to run.

The average heat pump has 10,000 watts of heat strips that kick in to support the compressor. if your unit is low on freon these heat strips could be running constantly. Not sure 10,000 watts measures up? Imagine if you had an average home with 7 rooms (including kitchen, bathrooms, dining room and bedrooms) and you decided to put 100 watt bulbs in every room. if you had three bulbs in every room and turned them all on at the same time you would be running about 2,100 watts. That is merely a fraction of the 10,000 watts your heat strips will be pulling. A simple seasonal service of your equipment will reveal if this situation is happening on your homes hvac system. Call around, get some prices and remember we are also here to help. Our current prices for a seasonal service is $130 but are running a special until november for $95.

Why service your A/C?

If you’re like the average homeowner than your heating/AC system is probably one of the most neglected things in the your home. Most people are aware of the need to service their vehicles on a regular basis with oil changes, spark plugs etc. But we often fail to give our heating and A/C units regular maintenance. We regularly adjust our thermostats expecting the system to cool or heat the house efficiently though we rarely if ever have the unit serviced. Most of us have no idea that our systems may be running on their last leg and we often find out at the worst times as they tend to breakdown right in the middle of winter when we need them the most. Did you know a unit that is low on freon, if ran in the winter, can cause your electric bill to soar through the roof? I experienced this one firsthand years ago when I failed to check my freon and received my february bill from P.W.C for $550. (It’s true, my wallet has the scars to prove it.) I’ll explain the technical aspects of that in a future blog but for now take some time and really consider having your heat checked out before the temperature starts to really drop. There are also a ton of great reasons to have it serviced other than utility bills. Some benefits include: cleaner air in your home, less breakdowns during the year, and a longer equipment life span. Hope this info helps someone.

Save Money with the flip of a switch

Now is the time when most of us will be turning off our air conditioners and flipping on the heat for the next six months or so. I would like to warn some of you that have gas heat or electric furnaces to turn on your A/C at least once a week for a couple of minutes so your compressors will not seize up from sitting idle too long. It happens every year. At the beginning of the summer I get many calls to replace compressors that will not start up for the summer season. Your air conditioner in many respects is just like a car;if it sits too long without cranking it will go bad. so save yourself a little money and turn on that ac on once a week.
